The "Valle d’Itria", spotted with “Trulli” and “Masserie”, stands on the South East area of the Murge plateau. It covers part of the provinces of Bari, Taranto and Brindisi, enclosing the whole municipality of Martina Franca, Locorotondo and Cisternino, together with parts of the territories of Alberobello, Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica. The name “Itria” goes back to the Byzantine cult of Madonna Odegitria (The Lady who shows the way) introduced in the 10th century by the Basilian monks who came from the Byzantine East.
